About Average Joe

Posted by Average Joe

My name is Ray and at the age 24 I am starting my golfing career as a beginner.  I have only been golfing a handful of times in my life so far.  I got my first set of clubs in my teenage years and used them maybe three times but because of work and school put them away to collect dust.  Around September of 2008 I got a new job that gave me the opportunity to work flexable hours and have the weekends off.  So I decided to go golfing since I had the time and put my old clubs to the test.  Well this was no Cinderella story.  I stunk!!!  But I did enjoy the game and the challenge of becoming better.  I went about 5 more times that season before the snow started to fall.  Since then I have taken 5 lessons and have done a ton of research on golf by watching the Golf Channel everynight, studying the pro’s, and absorbing any internet info I can come across.  I have fallen in love with the game and have made a personal goal to develop my skills to one day compete in a PGA Event.  This site is a living journal to my road to the PGA.  Along with documenting my games and progress this will also be a site for golfers of all skill to come together and share ideas and opinions for everything golf.

Congratulations Ray. You couldn´t make a better decision than that – to set a high goal of playing on a PGA event. You will get there. I have no doubt you might encounter negative moments but
be strong and keep on moving ahead. Every inch counts. You can do it!
I set my goal 10 yrs ago to have my own golf course. I was in Florida with plenty of golf courses to play but
I wanted to move back to Brazil and build our own club and spread the magic of golf.
So, we did, my wife and I came back and since then we are building the course and helping people to learn
the basics of golf. Lots of work but we love it and we will prevail.

    Good luck in your endeavor.

  2. Average Joe Said,

I appreciate your words of encouragement! Best of luck on completing your course! I’ve learned to ignore the “you can’t” people. If I listened to half of those people I wouldn’t be were I am today!

P.S. Let me know when its done so we can do a review!

    Hey Ray;

Congrats on your drive to make it to the pros. There is nothing more special than someone setting, aiming and following through on their dreams. I just read an article today and it stated that in order to become a true master of an activity one must accumulate 10,000 hours of practice time. So if you can average 2500 hours per year, which would translate into about 15 hours per week, 2 hour per day, you should be able to reach that level of play in under 5 years.

As for golfing, I have been golfing for about 8 years and I am a 8 handicap, not too bad but I need to play more. I only get in about a dozen rounds per year. I am looking to pick up another membership this year and that should allow me to get my 3-5 rounds per week I feel I need to get to become a scratch golfer.

Lets keep in touch, feel free to add my e-mail address.

If you are serious about becoming a professional then you need to find professional help to help you achieve your goal. You and your instructor should first evaluate your goals and then layout the ground work for getting there.

Going from beginner to Tour Player is a lofty goal at your age and it may not be realistic but with the proper guidance you could become a good player.

Joe, thanks for your input! I will put the info to good use when building a practice routine!

  6. John Said,

I belive if you put your mind to it, you can do what ever you want. Keep up the good work and never let anyone tell you can not do it. Work hard and your goal will come into sight.

  7. Jay Said,

I create a magazine focused on the up bringing of the Average Joe Golfer, through my web site, and also through Hard copy’s of the magazine, from Kansas City to the world, I try to incorporate all things that only the average golfer, can associate with.
Curious to see, if you would be interested in adding some content or doing a little promoting of your nature, through my magazine and web site?

  8. PG Said,

    Hi Ray

Good luck with your challenge, I have to say that I would of loved to have made an attempt at doing something like this when I was your age. Personally I think you are starting perhaps a bit late but if you put your mind and the hours in to it then I firmly believe that anyone can achieve almost anything. Having the time available to do it is a massive bonus.

I myself have set myself a golfing challenge to reduce my handicap from 20 (ish) to single digits in less than 7 months. Not sure if this will be realistic but overall the comments from friends are encouraging as they feel I do have the potential/ability to do this, however with a wife and two kids and an inflexible job it will be very difficult.

One thing I would advise is to have a plan in place as to what your goals are throughout the process and to plan your days and weeks in advance e.g. week 1 play a round to get baseline, week 2 get official handicap (if not got one already), week 3 – focus on putting, week 4 focus on something else etc. Step by step is the approach.

    Good luck with it.

    PG

  9. PG Said,

Amendment to previous post. Actually if your goal is to simpy play a PGA event then you are definitely not leaving it too late.
