Izzo Big Daddy Insta-Net Review

Posted by Average Joe

As we all know it can cost a pretty penny to get out to golf range multiple times a week to get some serious practice in.  So the question is how can I practice my swing without emptying my wallet.  Well with a practice net you can shag some balls without spending the dough every time.  It also gives you more flexibility to practice whenever you have time.  Well the Izzo Big Daddy Insta-Net will give you that opportunity.  I picked one up for myself at my local Dick’s Sporting Goods location.  Out of all the practice nets this one was the least expensive one that I could find.

Let’s start with what comes in the box.  The Izzo Big Daddy Insta-Net is a pretty simple design.  It’s basically flexable, interconnecting poles and a snap on net.  It also comes with a small green piece of practice turf with a rubber tee and a rubber wooden tee holder.  It also comes with simple two page instruction manual.

The Izzo Big Daddy Insta-Net isn’t all that difficult to setup, but if your a perfectionist like myself it will take you a bit longer to setup.  If you hate building tents then you will really hate putting this together.  There are a bunch of three foot poles that are interconnected down the middle by a bungee cord.  As you connect the poles together you basically make a big flexible circle.  Now comes the fun part.  You now have to connect a bunch of nylon straps to flex the circle of poles into the shape you see in the picture.  Once you have the straps in place you now have to attach the net.  The net just snaps on but you will have to readjust the position of the snaps as you go along so that it is spread evenly across the poles.  This way you don’t have too much slack on one side or the other.

As you can tell the setup is not too hard but can be time consuming.  The net is constantly flopping around and doesn’t stay standing very easily until you work with it for a bit.  Also once you have the net setup, plan on keeping it up for a while as it’s not the easiest to break back down and put away.  One other concern that I have with the Izzo Big Daddy Insta-Net is that the net angles back when standing up.  You have to be careful to not hit a high lofted shot or top the ball when you hit the ball.  If you do, you run the risk of hitting the ball up and over the net.  I did this once and watched in slow motion as the ball when way up in the air and came down right on my neighbors truck!  I quickly piled my things in the garage and went inside. :) The Izzo Big Daddy Insta-Net does however keep the balls in the net as long as you hit it there.  It just takes some getting used to and you have to play with the positioning of the net.  All in all, for the price you can’t beat it.

Now onto the little piece of practice turf.  The turf is approximately one foot by two feet and has a tee hole on each end.  The rubber tee and the rubber tee holder are great. They are the standard height and quality of the rubber tees you use at the golf range.  The turf is also the same quality make you would find at the range.  The one issue with the turf is the size.  Since the piece is so small it makes it very light.  Every time you hit a ball, especially an iron shot directly off the turf, it moves.  So you constantly find yourself readjusting the turf every three to four shots.  Again, like the net,  you get what you pay for.

Izzo Big Daddy Insta-Net Conclusion:

Pros:

  • Can’t beat the price.  The next least expensive net is about $30 more and is the exact same thing.
  • Easier to setup and take down than other more expensive nets
  • Extremely durable

Cons:

  • Very flimsy and can fall over easily
  • Turf constantly moves around when hitting balls
  • Too difficult to take down and put back up for such a simple net, though its easier than other bigger nets

Medicus Dual Hinge 460cc Driver Review

Posted by Average Joe

As you all know, I have had a Medicus Dual Hinge 460cc Driver for at least two or three weeks now.  I decided to hold off writing a review until I could use it a few more times to track some progress.  I feel that I have used the training aid enough now to give a fair and critical review on the driver and the items that come along with it.

First let’s take a look at everything that comes in the box.  Included in the box is the Medicus Dual Hinge 460cc Driver, Medicus Head Cover, “Nothing Gets You Close to Total Golf Perfection” DVD featuring Chuck Evans, “Top Tips From Top Pros” DVD, Instructional Manual, a hex/allen key, and some paper work for a free video analysis of your swing.  Now you get more free gifts, such as the dual handed putting trainer.

The Medicus Dual Hinge 460cc Driver and all it's contents

Now we’ll start by going though the accessories first.  The first thing I flipped though before anything else was the instructional manual.  Before picking it up, the first thing I asked myself was, “What kind of instructions could possibly be in a manual for a golf club?”  After breezing through the content I was thoroughly impressed.  The manual was basically a reference guide to help you understand why the golf club would break down during your swing so you can make the proper corrections.  (See picture below)  I still find myself opening the manual to check what caused the club to break down on me.

A glimpse inside the Medicus instruction manual

After going through the instructional manual I popped in the “Top Tips From Top Pros” DVD.  There was no DVD menu, it just went straight into short clips of different pro golfers giving their “tip” for developing a great drive.  They definitely give a lot of free advise in the DVD but beware of information overload.  There is enough rapid fire tips to cause you to start over-thinking your swing.  Make sure to use it as a way to keep ideas fresh in your mind, to possibly help correct swing issues, instead of a guide to the prefect swing.  One pain point about the DVD is that there are no chapters.  To revisit a certain tip you need to fast forward through the DVD like you were using a VHS.  I definitely think a menu is not necessary but I would at least make each tip a chapter for easy searching and replay.

Next I put in the “Nothing Gets You Closer To Total Golf Perfection” DVD.  The DVD is a very simple instruction video, feature Chuck Evans, who demistrates how the club works.  This video is great.  It’s quick and to the point.  Chuck basically goes through all the break points and helps explain the information that’s covered in the instruction manual about the break points and how to use the club.

Now onto what you have all been waiting for.  Let’s go over the Medicus Dual Hinge 460cc Driver!   After opening the box and taking the driver in my hands all I could think about was the ad’s I saw on TV about increased accuracy and distance.  Images of myself at the driving range hitting the ball to the net ran through my head.  Then reality set in and I told myself to slow down and try swinging the club first.  I setup like I was teeing off and took my first swing.  I came to finish position and it didn’t break!  I couldn’t believe it, did I already have the perfect swing and just spent my money for nothing?  Yeah right!  I then remembered the last page in the manual about setting the hinge tension.  The tension was set to tight out of the box and I needed to loosen the hinges.  As you can see below there are two hinges that make this training aid work.  Each one needs the tension adjusted for it to properly work.  One hinge controls the reaction to position of the sweet spot during your swing and the other hinge controls the reaction to the shaft during the swing.  If the shaft is off plane anywhere during your swing the club will break.  If the sweet spot is not in the right position at anytime during your swing the club will break.

A close-up of the dual hinge technology

After adjusting the attention on the hinges I decided to put the Medicus to the test again.  I took my second swing and WHAM the Medicus broke before I could even get it back three inches from the starting position.  I opened the trusty manual to reference the break and I found that I was taking the club head back to fast.  So I tried again.  I started back much slower, this time getting further into my back swing where the club broke once again.  Once again I referenced the manual to identify possible flaws in my back swing.  As you can tell, this is one training aid that can help you teach yourself at home during your spare time.  This is one feature I like as I don’t have all the time in the world to take lessons frequently, nor the money.

I’m sure at this point everyone is thinking, “Great, so it breaks when you swing it, but does it actually help improve your swing?”  Well let me answer that question for you.  So the video that was too choppy to put up on the site, that was video of myself trying the Medicus.  Let me tell you, it does work!  I hit about five balls with my real driver first, to get an idea of what my ball flight and distance normally looked like.  I then took the Medicus and “tried” to hit another five balls.  After many tries and the club breaking down, I was able to hit five balls after making the appropriate adjustments.  After using the Medicus I then hit another five balls with my real driver.  Yes!  There was a difference.  My slice was much less noticeable and I would say I added at least ten to fifteen yards to my drive.

As I continued to hit more balls with my real driver I noticed I was going back to my bad swing behaviors, so I grab the Medicus once again.  This is the real value of the Medicus.  It’s able to help keep you stay in tempo and on plane without having an instructor looking over your shoulder to keep you there.  Now for the people who think it’s the magic, overnight, fix-all for your golf swing problems you will be disappointed.  The Medicus is just like any other training aid.  It takes time and practice to make ground shattering improvement, but in my opinion, this is hands down, a must have item for any avid golfer looking to improve their game.  As a once skeptic myself, I can now tell you from experience that the Medicus Dual Hinge 460cc Driver is well worth it!

GolfConnect.com… Scam or Dream Opportunity?

Posted by Average Joe

So I was on Golf Galaxy’s website to checkout the Golf Galaxy Amateur Tour schedule for my area. When checking out the schedule and prices to get in on some of the tournaments I noticed they offered a discount for people who were “Golf & Travel Consultants” for GolfConnect.com. I went on to read about Golf Connect and what they are all about. It seems to me that it sounds too good to be true and usually that ends up being the case. The way the membership packages are built and promoted it sounds just like the Amway/Quickstar get up. Which is network marketing or better known as a “pyramid scam”.  I do know that Avon is the same setup but it is quite reputable and people really do make a comfortable living off of it.  The question I have is Golf Connect the Avon of golf?  They do offer a package that costs nothing supposedly, but it doesn’t come with all the travel perks, personalized website, and extra commission opportunities.  I was hoping that someone might have known someone who has done it or maybe someone has even done it themselves.  Check out the website and let me know what you think. Medicus Driver and Irons

Posted by Average Joe

I have been thinking about picking up the Medicus Driver or Iron but am not completely sure if it will be worth the money. I have heard that you don’t learn to swing better but learn to swing the Medicus properly so it won’t break but when it comes to correcting your golf swing with a real club it doesn’t make much of a difference. If this is true I am not sure if it’s worth the money. Has anyone personally used this training aid and what did you think of it?? Is it worth the money?
